irl info
- this carrd is a resource for those who need an explanation to what an irl is! -
i will also provide answers to some questions people have about irls
•••
what is an irl?
an irl is someone that is the physical form of what you’d class as a “character” in media (such as movies, shows, books, etc.)
for example: i am literally mari from omori! /srs
this experience is linked and unique to psychosis.
the DO’s and DONT’s
DO
• support whoever told you!
• ask non-harmful questions
• try and understand if you’re confused
DONT
• reality check
• insist it is a “delusion”
• use the terms d/a, p/a, delulu, or anything related to those as they do much more harm than good
• tell us to “get help” or anything related to that
why is reality checking harmful?
while some people need/rely on reality checking, most can be sent into panic attacks and/or episodes from it. reality checking should only be used when someone specifically states they need it, otherwise do not use it.
someone you know just told you they are an irl. what should you do?
do NOT resort to reality checking them or calling them delusional. support them! tell them you are happy you shared that info, and that you are fine with the info that they have shared! :) support them as best as you can, make them feel comfortable and not let them regret sharing that info
how to tell someone you are an irl:
telling someone is scary and anxiety-inducing.. but it is good to tell someone so you can have a safe space!1. do not tell someone if you aren’t ready yet or if you know they won’t take it well, safety is your number one priority.
2. explain what you are feeling and show the person boundaries of what you do not want them to do or say around you
3. do not be afraid to be yourself, if someone is not happy with who you are, distance yourself
4. if all hope is lost and this person doesn’t accept you, find a place somewhere else. places like discord and instagram are great for finding irl safe spaces :)
